How To Maintain Your Handmade Survival Machete Knife
Proper care ensures your hand-forged machete to ultimately last lifetime. Follow these expert steps.
1. Monthly Blade Lubrication & Fingerprint Prevention
After each use or at least once per month, apply a thin coat of protectant such as food-safe mineral oil, machine oil, or CLP (Cleaner, Lubricant, Protectant). Moreover, since fingerprints contain natural acids that can etch and dull the steel, always wipe the blade clean immediately after handling.
2. Removing Rust
If rust appears:
1. Clean the area with a light oil or gasoline.
2. Gently scrub with fine-grit sandpaper (400+ grit) or a specialized rust eraser along the grain of the steel.
3. Wipe clean and apply a heavier coat of oil. For a polished finish, use a buffing wheel.
3. Caring for the Sheath & Handle
Leather Sheath: Additionally, condition with shoe polish or leather conditioner every 6 months to prevent drying and cracking.
Rosewood Handle: Then, apply furniture wax or linseed oil annually to preserve the wood and enhance its grip.
Important: Never store the blade in the sheath if either is damp, and avoid prolonged sun exposure, which can cause the leather to shrink and deform.
Frequently Asked Questions about Handmade Machete Knife
What is the purpose of the small companion knife (Karda)?
The Karda is a traditional part of the Handmade Machete Knife set. It serves as a precision utility knife for smaller tasks that the large machete isn’t suited for. Moreover, it’s ideal for whittling, skinning game, carving notches, preparing food, and even sharpening the main blade’s edge. As a result, it helps keep the primary blade sharp and ready for heavy-duty chopping.
Is the Bajyu better than a standard straight machete?
For chopping and brush clearing, yes decisively. The forward-curved design and balanced weight distribution act like a miniature axe, therefore transferring energy more efficiently into each cut. However, for slicing through tall grass, a longer, straighter machete might be more suitable. Overall, the Bajyu Handmade Machete Knife remains the superior all-around bushcraft and outdoor survival tool.
Can it handle processing game or chopping bone?
The 6mm spine and 5160 steel construction make it capable for processing medium game and chopping through small bones. However, for frequent, heavy-duty bone chopping, a dedicated cleaver or bone saw is recommended to preserve your machete's edge.
