World War II Khukuri: “The Dehradoone Khukuri” the second name given to the World War II khukuri (kukri). This kukri has one of the most beautiful shapes due to the more curves on the front side of the blade. The size of those world war II khukuri is a bit bigger than the current khukuri. The size of khukuri is bigger because those knives were used in world war. The materials used are Highly Graded Carbon Steel (car and jeep leaf spring, 5160) for the blade, Water buffalo Leather for the scabbard ( outside), Buffalo Horn for the handle, pinewood for scabbard (inside), Brass and “Laha”(Nepali Traditional Glue). The Dehradoone khukuri has blade size 11 inch which is polished and its handle size is 5.5 inches. This knife is made harder due to the strong combination of steel which consists of the spine about 22-25 RC, belly 45-46 RC, and edge if 58-60 RC.
The total weight of Dehradoone khukuri weights about 950 gms. This khukuri was used by the Nepali people during the world war. Due to its long length and sharp blade, they easily attack the opposing team and have earn names all over the world as “Brave Gurkhali”. The Dehradoone khukuri is more popular in the world as a sample of peace. Due to more curves on the front side, it looks far different than other usual khukuri. It has two small blood dropper at the inner curve. Blood dropper drops the blood away from the khukuri which protects the user’s hand to become moisture free which helps the user to attack again. Due to the larger demand in the khukuri that was manufacture from the place Dehradoon(small town) so the Gorkhalis kept the name “The Dehradoone Khukuri”
We highly recommend that the wooden parts on all Gurkha Khukuri are treated with the appropriate timber oil or wood treatment prior to use to protect and prolong the life of the timber.
